Attaining high performance communications: a vertical approach

Achieving high performance in computer communications in this era of massive volume and tremendous bandwidth demand is an on-going challenge. Taking a unique approach, this work examines each network layer in the complete vertical stack. The authors, leading domain experts, propose the use of a coordinated effort to eliminate bottlenecks, addressing optimization opportunities in each layer. This approach includes the integration of technological advances and considers real challenges due to hardware limitations and concerns with underlyingplatforms. It takes into account recent advances such as virtualization, multicore, hybrid/heterogeneous platforms with accelerators, and coherent interconnects.
