Fundamentals of aircraft and airship design v. 1 Aircraft design
Nicolai, Leland M.
Carichner, Grant
Fundamentals of Aircraft and Airship Design, a revision and expansion of the 1975 classic aircraft design textbook that has been used worldwide for more than 30 years, has been completely updated with the latest industry processes and techniques. The organizing theme of the text is that the aircraft is a dust cover. The designer must remember that the aircraft is only a transport mechanism for the payload (people, cargo, bombs, sensors, etc.), and that all designdecisions must consider the needs of the payload first. The book emphasizes that the aircraft design process is a compromise and that there is no right answer. However, there is always a best answer based on existing requirements andavailable technologies. The best design answer today may well be different from that of tomorrow. Using color and design examples throughout the book, the authors guide you step by step through the design process as it would happen in the actual design environment. Updated material includes designing for survivability (stealth), solar and human power aircraft systems, and very high altitude operation with air breathing propulsion. The added material discusses both the science and art of aircraft design. The art of design is captured in thehistory, the lessons learned, the factoids, the case studies and full color pictures of many aircraft. The chapter on material selection and structural arrangement is completely new and contains a complete wing design example. The text is aimed at graduate and upper level undergraduate students as well as practicing engineers. It comprehensively addresses the conceptual design phase, for civil and military aircraft, from initial consideration of user needs to thedecision to iterate the design one more time. The book is complete in that the reader need not look elsewhere for additional information.
