Histological analysis of endocrine disruptive effects in small laboratory fish
Dietrich, Daniel
Krieger, H.
Many authorities for risk assessment and registration of chemical, agricultural chemical and pharmaceutical compounds in North America, Europe and Japan use small fish like zebrafish, medaka, and fathead minnows. This book will help to standardize the histopathological interpretation of results from aquatic bioassays and field observations by describing basic biological functions and contrasting normal histology with histopathological conditions in a variety of fish species. Since the present literature lacks a comprehensive presentation of the basic biological function, the normal histology, and the histopathology of small fish gonads; this book clarifies much of the inconsistency currently encountered in the scientific literature. The book provides a step-by-step introduction into small fish biology and physiology while exemplifying at each step where and how xenobiotics incl. endocrine disrupting chemicals may interactand intervene. Schematic illustrations and associated black and white as wellas color histopathology examples are provided to illustrate the topic discussed with specific examples. The inclusion of a CD with all figures in the book allows for simultaneous viewing of histopathological sections or schematics athigh power resolution while reading the book, thus enabling improved understanding and interpretation of the findings as well as using the figures as reference for the readers own experimental findings. This book, in amalgamating theknow-how of more than 1200 peer-reviewed literature into extensive tables, provides an overview of nearly all known xenobiotic mediated endocrine effects in fish. In addition, specially complied tables, differentiate chemicals by their specific effects, their effective concentrations in a given species, gender, and developmental stage. Additionally specific guidance is provided on experimental design, statistics as well to how to preserve and process fish, tissuesamples, including various recipes for fixation, staining and finally qualitative and quantitative interpretation.
