Value Based Health Care provides a complete examination of value-based healthcare management which links quality and financial success. It is written by an international leader in health care quality whose previous books have been acclaimed in both academia and administration. Todays health care management professionals, hospital administrators, and clinicians are being forced to incorporate evidence-based quality measurements into their delivery of care, and toreport the success of these measures in order to be paid. There is a tremendous need for these professionals to understand how to manage their complex services by providing value to the patient and value to the organization in terms of profit. This books approach includes substantial discussion of core principles of value-based health care management, coupled with core examples of tangible products of value, based on the authors more than 20 years of experience with quality in multiple health care settings (from ambulatory practice to homecare). The jumping off point will be the national patient safety goals, the CMS report cards, the genesis and rationale for these programs and their impacton hospital care and reimbursement. Core examples will expand on the traditional acute care setting to incorporate such subjects as patient centered care, suicide prevention, end of life care, infection, physical environment of care, and clinical competence. Emphasis will refocus administrative leadership frombudget to mode of production, recognizing that investing in quality is an investment in organizational financial well-being. Costly adverse events will be analyzed through root cause analysis so health professionals have a sense of what costs the organization when quality is poor. Health care administrators and other professionals will be provided with the information, tools and techniques they need to link quality to finance. Each chapter of the book will include educational goals for the topic, background to the central issue, explanation of the core principles involved in adding value to the product, core examples based on real cases from hospital practices, summary things to think about, and suggested test questions to explore the theory being introduced in each section.
