Nanotechnology corresponds to the manipulation of objects that are as small as a few atoms or molecules. This technology has enabled us to produce nanomaterials, namely materials of nanometric size in at least one of their dimensions. This very small size confers new properties or particular behaviors that are very useful in new technological applications. This book describes the exploration of the properties of biological systems on the nanometer scale (especially with AFM), the toxicological issues associated with the development of nanotechnology and the need to develop socially responsible research in this emerging field. INDICE: A Foreword by Pr Yves Dufrene Chapter 1: The recent development of nanotechnologies Chapter 2: Techniques for the characterization of samples on the nanoscale Chapter 3: Principles and state–of–the–art of Atomic Force Microscopy Chapter 4: Preparing biological samples for AFM characterization Chapter 5: AFM explores the structure and properties of biological samples on the nanometer scale Chapter 6: Recent developments of AFM: coupling with other techniques and new modes Chapter 7: Conducting socially responsible nano–research practice
