Physics qualifying examination: problems and solutions

The chapters of this book are based on lectures delivered annually by Professor Poole in a course to prepare students for their Ph.D. qualifying examination (admission to candidacy examination) in the physics department of the University of South Carolina. Professor Farach has kept a record of all the qualifying examinations in the department since 1981. The proposed book holds selectedproblems (and answers to them) which appeared in these examinations. Each problem will refer to the chapter or chapters of the Handbook (Poole, the PhysicsHandbook 2/e) which discuss the background for it. Poole, The Physics Handbook 2/e, published in 12/2006 and sold 300 copies in the first six months. Of the first edition 1,800 copies were sold.
