Historically, the Apple Macintosh OS X operating system has received little attention in the security industry. This trend is changing. In the past year, Apple has issued more than 100 security patches for OS X, underscoring the factthat it not a foolproof operating system. The National Vulnerability Databaseshowed an increase of 228% in the annual vulnerability discovery rate for Apple's products over a two-year period, compared with a 73% increase for Microsoft products in the same time frame. Recent research targeting OS X has increased significantly and media attention regarding its security has increased as well. The emergence in 2006 of malware exploiting known and previously unknown (i.e. "zero day") vulnerabilities confirms that Apple has become a target. Thephenomenal popularity of Apple's consumer products, especially the iPod, has also thrust Apple in to the spotlight of the malware community. In 2006, an application called was created that can download thousands of business documentsfrom a networked computer to an iPod in less than two minutes. The recent ballyhoo surrounding the release of Apple's iPhone has also turned up the volume, with Gartner Group issuing a statement that the device could "punch a hole" through corporate security. This book will focus on the vulnerabilities uncovered, as well as future possibilities attackers may focus on. It will also provide a close-up look at security mechanisms that can be put in place to prevent exploitation attempts.
