Recent years have seen a significant expansion in our knowledge of acute brain disorders, and in our ability to intervene and enhance outcomes in critically ill neurological patients. This issue of the Neurologic Clinics will providehealth care providers working in the acute clinical neurosciences (neurologists, neurosurgeons, neurointensivists, general intensivists) with up to date knowledge of the epidemiological and pathophysiological principles in a broad spectrum of critical neurological illnesses, and serve as a guide to state-of-the-art diagnostic and management paradigms. The volume is written by a multi-disciplinary group of experts and is divided into three general areas of neurological critical care: (a) the critical care of acute neurological disorders such as ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury, (b) the management of cardiopulmonary and other systemic disturbances related to acute neurological disorders, and (c) the neurological complicationsof critical illness, such as encephalopathy and critical illness neuromuscular disorders.
