Galanin is a neuropeptide which is found in the central and peripheral nervous system. It is involved in a number of physiological processes such as regulation of food intake, metabolism and reproduction, regulation of neurotransmitter and hormone release, nociception, intestinal motility and secretion, and more recently in nervous system development and response to injury. The wide diversity of actions is mediated by several galanin receptor subtypes. This book gives an overview of the current state of galanin research and shows how the identification, isolation and characterization of this peptide was brought about and how the functionality of galanin was revealed as the pharmacological tools to dissect galaninergic mechanisms were developed. Comprehensive collectionof information on galaninergic functions and mechanisms Explains how a new methodological approach can lead to the detection of a new substance class Describes potential applications in drug development for a variety of conditions Useful for basic neuroscientists and clinicians alike
