Managing research, development and innovation: managing the unmanageable
Jain, Ravi
Triandis, Harry C.
Weick, Cynthia W.
As with the first two editions the proposed book covers most aspects of the research, development, and innovation process. Covered are the management skills and leadership theories essential to generating products, services and systems to excel in the global economy. Topics such as design of jobs, organizing hierarchies, resolving conflicts, motivating employees, and creating an innovative work environment are discussed and covered in detail. The book provides guidance on how superior management skills can increase funding, foster innovations, generate revenues and profits, and improve effectiveness of technology-based organizations. The book also covers challenging issues related to diversity in science and technology organizations and provides insights as to how diversity can be used to enhance creativity. This new edition has been expanded tocover the larger innovation process. Two chapters have been added which focuson the innovation process and the interrelationships of R&D personnel and organizations with other players in this process. All chapters in the book have been revised to reflect the challenges of conducting research and development within the context of this larger innovation process. Specifically, a chapter on technology-based innovation incorporates some of the topics from the prior edition that focused simply on technology transfer. The ecology of technological innovation incorporates some of the topics from the university research enterprise and adds topics related to regional economic development, innovation, cluster theory, and global networks and innovation. The goal of this third edition is to embody R&D in the larger process of innovation, and thus reflect what has happened worldwide as science and engineering increasingly drive economic development.
