This text discusses the high-resolution NMR of liquid samples and concentrates exclusively on spin-half nuclei (mainly 1H and 13C). It is aimed at people who are familiar with the use of routine NMR for structure determination and who wish to deepen their understanding of just exactly how NMR experiments work.It demonstrates that in NMR it is possible, quite literally on the back of anenvelope, to make exact predictions of the outcome of quite sophisticated experiments. The experiments chosen are likely to be encountered in the routine NMR of small to medium-sized molecules, but are also applicable to the study oflarge biomolecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids. The book starts off at a gentle pace, working through some more-or-less familiar ideas, and then elaborating these as the book progresses. Each chapter ends with exercises whichare designed to assist in the understanding of the ideas presented and to grasp the underlying ideas.Professor James Keeler is a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at the University ofCambridge, and a Fellow of Selwyn College. He received his degree in 1981 from Oxford University and his D. Phil in 1984. In 1989 he took up the position of Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge and since 2003 has beena Senior Lecturer. He was appointed in 2005 as Editor-in-chief of Wileys flagship NMR journal, Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry. In 2006 he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has been awarded many prizes including in 1988 the Royal Society of Chemistry, Meldola Medal, in 1997 University of Cambridge, Pilkington Teaching Prize and in 2005 the Royal Society of Chemistrys Industrially sponsored Silver Medal for contributions in Magnetic Resonance. In addition to being actively involved in the development of new NMR Professor Keeler is well known for his clear and accessible exposition of NMR spectroscopy.
