This book explores alternative ways of understanding Havana both as an imagined political construct and as a cultural product. It provides a vision of how and why we see the city as we do and evaluates the ways in which images of Havana have been (mis)constructed in the global imaginary. Bringing out interactions and tensions between real and imaginary spaces, it examines the political implications of unique spatial and metaphorical representations of the city and explores the crucial role that image-makers and cultural producers have played in the global perception of Havana through photography, material culture and documentary film.
