This book is a project of intellectual history focusing on the evolution of realist thought on nationalism and the nation-state. It contributes to the revisionist literature that engages with the recovery of classical realism by recovering the history of realist theorization of the nation-state and its ideological corollary, nationalism. This history is presented in a sequence of snapshots, represented by four different realist authors: E.H. Carr and H. Morgenthau (as classical realists), J. Herz (as a transitional figure), and J. Mearsheimer (as a structural realist). The book engcages with each realist’s theory in a three-step process. The starting point of the analysis is the different notion of power employed by each realist. The next step focuses on the way divergent conceptions of power shaped different visions of nationalism and its interaction with the state in the work of realists. Finally, the way realists engaged with the foreign policies of given nation-states is employed as an illustration of their theoretical framework as well as a tool to critically evaluate the efficacy of their theoretical insights.
