South Africa's renegade reels: the making and public lives of black-centered films

Covering such films as Fools, Mapantsula, and Come Back, Africa, this study approaches South African cinema with a critical eye to its complexity not only as a signifying system, but also as a cultural product with a public life. It engages with critical issues of racialization, apartheid and postapartheid politics, and postcolonialism, examing the content of significant South African films as well as the material conditions of their circulation and reception.
