The MRCGP used to have 4 modular elements the Multiple Choice paper (MCP), the written paper (WP), video or simulated surgery and orals. The new assessmentprocess (nMRCGP) will consist of 3 elements, an Applied Knowledge Test (AKT -multiple choice paper), a Clinical Skill Assessment (CSA) in the form of simulated patient consultation and OSCE stations and Workplace Based Assessment (WPBA), which involves the creation of an e-portfolio. The nMRCGP has been actice from August 2007 and all those wishing to register for their Certificate of Completion of Training in general practice will be required to complete the nMRCGP and will be eligible to register with the Royal College of GPs. The highly successful title 'Notes for the MRCGP, third edition, has been entirely updated to reflect the changes in the assessment of candidates for the nMRCGP, although given publication is not until 2009, we've decided to drop the 'n' from the title, which signified the book was suitable for the new format exams and which was characteristic of books published in 2007/2008. The new edition continues to cover the new RCGP curriculum in notes format as well as providing specific examination tips, but for instance, describing appropriate revision tactics, pointing people in the direction of suitable support outside the scope of this text. Core topics will be of relevance for the rest of the readers' professional careers, e.g. the management of change, teamwork, personal educationplans, EBM principles, burnout and other areas of self care. The book will equip candidates with the skills and knowledge of HOW to address their learning needs, e.g. finding appropriate clinical information and ability to appraise it. They should find the book helpful in pointing them in the correct directionto help them pass the exam, whether that be in practicing examination of the knee or doing a critical review of a paper.
