Laser cooling of solids provides a timely review of this promising field of research. Particular attention is given to the physics of cooling processes andthe mathematical description of these processes; chapters discuss the fundamentals of fluorescent cooling and the theory of laser cooling. The authors alsoreview previous experimental investigations in laser cooling. Chapters discuss progress towards key potential applications of laser cooling: self-cooling components of solid state lasers, laser cooling of solid-state information carriers in echo-processors and the problems associated with cooling solid-state quantum processors. INDICE: Thermodynamic fundamentals of fluorescent cooling; Theory of lasercooling; Experimental investigations and limitations of fundamental nature; Self-cooling of components of solid state lasers; Laser cooling of solid state information carriers of optical echo-processors; Problems of cooling solid state quantum processors
