This book generates an accessible, short text which acts as a primer for those students who need to study these topics in more detail and to give students (of biomedicine, allied health and nutrition for example) enough detail to understand metabolism without drowning in organic chemistry. Although there are very many excellent biochemistry texts, most try to cover all aspects of the subject. There are three introductory chapters dealing with the principles of metabolism and its control followed by themed chapters on the liver, the communication (endocrine and neurological) systems, blood and the vascular system, muscle & adipose tissue, the gut and the pancreas. As stated above the focus is on metabolic integration rather than pathways. A concluding chapter includes aselection of case studies that cover aspects of metabolic and organ-system integration and is of particular interest to biomedical science, nutrition and sports science students.
