An examination of population movements, both forced and voluntary, within thebroader context of Europe in the aftermath of the Second World War, in both Western and Eastern Europe. The authors bring to life problems of war and post-war chaos, and assess lasting social, political and demographic consequences. She is the author of 'Public Health in Germany under Allied Occupation' (Rochester University Press); co-editor with Mark Mazower and David Feldman of 'Postwar reconstruction in Europe' (OUP); and co-editor with David Cesarani, Susanne Bardgett and J-D Steinert of two volumes on survivors ofthe Holocaust, entitled 'Landscapes after battle' (Vallentine Mitchell). She was also guest editor of a special issue of the 'Journal of Contemporary History' on 'Relief in the Aftermath of War'. ELIZABETH WHITE Lecturer in International History at the University of Ulster, UK. As well as working on postwar Leningrad, she has recently published a monograph on Russian revolutionary politics, 'The Socialist Alternative to Bolshevism: The Socialist Revolutionary Party in Emigration, 1921-39', (Routledge). Her current research is on childhood in the Russian emigration, focusing on cultural practices and national identity.
