Alliteration occurs in a wide variety of contexts in stress-initial languages, including Icelandic, Finnish and Mongolian. It can be found in English from 'Beowulf' to 'The Sun'. Nevertheless, alliteration remains an unexamined phenomenon. This pioneering volume takes alliteration as its central focus across avariety of languages and domains. JONATHAN ROPER is interested in traditional linguistic genres and is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Estonian and Comparative Folklore at the University of Tartu, Estonia. He is author of 'English Verbal Charms', and editor of two collections of charms studies published by Palgrave Macmillan.
