Energy Efficient Design of Wireless Sensor Networks explores how to optimize energy supply in wireless sensor network (WSNs), which is much more complex than in conventional wired networks because it involves not only reducing the energy consumption of a single sensor node, but also maximizing the lifetime of an entire network. Traditionally, energy supply is the scarcest resource of WSNs. If one or more nodes fail due to lack of energy, the behavior of the entire network can potentially be impacted and the sensor network may not sustain normal functionality. Optimization of energy consumption has become the major challenge in designing communication protocols for WSNs. The book focuses on mobile wireless sensor networks characterized by poor connectivity among the mobile sensors, which proves difficult to form a well-connected mesh network for transmitting data through end-to-end connections from the sensors to the sink. The authors examine the idea of how to exploit the mobility of nodes to optimize their energy consumption and maximize the lifetime of the entire network, proposing to act primarily on two main levels: the neighbors discovery phase and data transfer methods.
