The book gives an overview of the status, the challenges, the architectures, and technological solutions for core and metropolitan networks aiming to support broadband services. On the one hand the authors will describe the current state of fixed telecommunication networks and the drivers and motives behind the current paradigm shift in the telecommunications industry, on the other handthey will explain how systems for point-to-point optical networks should be designed taking into account the analogue nature of the transmission channel aswell as the migration from point-to-point to multi-hop optical networks, fromstatic to dynamic networks, the migration towards data-centric networks and the role of optics in switching. The material to be used in this book will be distilled from the deliverables of the IST-NOBEL project. The complexity and diversity of the challenges, core and metro networks are facing, are due to the variety of architectures and technologies suggested, as solutions aim to satisfy a wide range of requirements.
