Gösta Mittag-Leffler (1846-1927) was an outstanding personality as a scientist and entrepreneur. His influence extended far beyond him being regarded as the “father of Swedish mathematics” through his manifold international contacts in science, business and art. His influence was crucial to Marie Curie being awarded the Nobel Prize twice. One of his great achievements was the founding of the journal Acta Mathematica, published by the Institut Mittag-Leffler of the Royal Academy of Science, which still today is one of the most prestigious research journals. Arild Stubhaug bases his biography on the extraordinary richcollection of sources which include more than 30000 letters of Mittag-Leffler’s correspondence. His biography contains many hitherto unknown facts of Mittag-Leffler’s life and work. The book will be of interest to general readers interested in science, culture, art, and business, as well as to mathematicians.
