Pain is a world-wide problem, and pain control is now considered a basic human right. Physicians in all specialties and satellite professions have a responsibility to recognize and treat pain adequately. Pain has been designated to be the fifth vital sign--as important as other basic vital signs. Every hospital must ensure that resident and staff physicians in all specialties understandthe essentials of acute and chronic pain and are able to provide pain care ina timely fashion. We propose to write a concise, up-to-date, evidence-based reference guide, similar to other books in the Pocket Notebook? Series (Dr. Urman, one of the proposed authors, wrote Pocket Anesthesia). It will be an invaluable tool for every resident and practicing physician who wishes to understand the basics of pain management, including all relevant guidelines and standards of care. In today?s fast-paced environment, there is a need for such a book, and currently there is no book on the market that addresses all pain management essentials in our proposed format. We will use a schematic, outline approach and use diagrams and tables for quick, easy reference. The book will contain all essential topics required for the resident and practitioner to quickly diagnose the pain disorder, safely prescribe the required pain medications, andarrange for advanced pain care if needed. This book is likely to appeal to every type of physician in both academic and private practice in the U.S. and abroad.
