Horrox, Jeremiah
Jeremiah Horrox (1618–1641) was one of the most interesting astronomers Britain has ever produced, and his tragically early death deprived the field of oneof its most brilliant talents. In his short life he achieved much, having mastered the current state of astronomy at Cambridge University and going on to make important new calculations about the diameter and position of known planets, moons and stars. In the 1660s and 70s several prominent scientists, including Huygens, Newton and Flamsteed, took an interest in Horrox’s discoveries andpublished his surviving treatises. This memoir of 1859 was part of a Victorian revival of interest in Horrox. It includes translation of his major work, Venus in Sole Visa, a draft of a treatise on the transit of Venus, in which he describes the conjunction of Venus with the sun, which he correctly calculated and observed in 1639. INDICE: Dedication; Preface; Memoir; Treatise: 1. The occasion, excellence, and utility of the observation; 2. Account of the observation; 3. What others observed, or might have observed, of this conjunction; 4. It is proved that the spot observed in the Sun's disc was really Venus; 5. The examination of the apparent longitude and latitude of Venus from the Sun; 6. The alteration of the apparent into the true situation of Venus; 7. An inquiry into the time andplace of the true conjunction of Venus and the Sun; 8. The demonstration of the node of Venus; 9. The beginning, middle, and end of the transit are shewn; 10. An examination of the calculations of astronomers respecting the foregoing; 11. The calculation of Copernicus; 12. The calculation of Lansberg; 13. The calculation of Longomontanus; 14. The calculation of Kepler; 15. Correction ofthe motions according to Rudolphi; 16. On the diameter of Venus; 17. On the diameters of the rest of the planets, of the proportion of the celestial spheres, and of the parallax of the Sun.
