Artificial materials with atomic/molecular-level tailored structures are the final goal of material scientists. Such structures enable electron-wavefunction control, which will improve material performance and generate new photonic/electronic phenomena. This book describes how photonic/electronic properties ofthin films can be improved by precise control of atomic and molecular arrangements, and demonstrates the prospect of artificial materials with tailored structures. It describes related topics including a self-organized lightwave network, and a heterogeneous integration process. It also assesses applications incomputers, optical switching systems, solar energy conversion systems, and bio/medical-photonics.
